Common questions
Straight answers, no sales spin.
The stuff tradies actually ask before they'll let a bot near their phone. If yours isn't here, email hello@kiwicalls.co.nz and we'll answer it plainly.
Will my customers hang up when they realise it's not me?
Fair thing to worry about. This isn't an old press-1 robot — it talks like a real person, at a normal pace, and it listens. And the real choice isn't the bot versus you: it's the bot versus your voicemail. When you're up a ladder or under a house, right now the caller gets nothing — and a lot of them just ring the next number. A phone that catches the job beats one that rings out.
Does it hang up on people?
Only on sales calls. If someone's obviously ringing about building work, the bot just gets on with taking the job. If someone's obviously selling websites or advertising, it says one polite line — "sorry, we're not interested, this line's just for building work" — and ends the call. When it genuinely can't tell, it asks one question: "Is what you're offering anything to do with building?" A yes and it carries on as normal.
Trade callers still get through. A supplier, a merchant, or another tradie after work all count as a yes — you'll still get the text. We're screening out sales pitches, not your industry.
And it errs towards your customer, every time. Someone who rambles, is older, has a strong accent, or is on a noisy site is treated as a real customer and never screened. A telemarketer getting a few extra seconds costs nothing. Hanging up on a real customer costs you a job.
Do junk calls cost me anything?
No. When the bot ends a call with a telemarketer or a wrong number, no text is sent — so there's nothing to charge you for and nothing to interrupt you.
Won't it lose me jobs, or miss the details?
It's not trying to be you. It catches who's calling, what the job is, where, and how urgent — then texts it straight to you. It's not quoting a re-roof over the phone. Anything real, you ring them back with the details already in your pocket. It's a lead-catcher, not a replacement.
Can it book jobs into my calendar?
Not right now, and we won't pretend it does. It captures the job and texts it to you, and you confirm the booking — nothing gets locked into your calendar behind your back. That means the worst case is a lead to double-check, never a booking you didn't make.
Does it text me the leads?
Yes — the caller's name, number, what the job is, where, and how urgent, as soon as the call ends. That's the heart of it: the lead lands on your phone, ready for you to ring back when your hands are free.
What about emergencies and after-hours?
You set what counts as one — a burst pipe, no water, a gas smell. The bot treats those as urgent: it reassures the caller, takes their details, and flags the job to you as urgent. Everything else it takes a message and texts you. After-hours is where it earns its keep — plenty of phones are dead by knock-off, and yours is still catching work.
Do I need new gear, or a new phone number?
No new hardware either way, and there are two ways to connect. Keep your own number: your phone passes calls to the bot — after it's rung for a few seconds, or as your answerphone for anything you miss. About 30 seconds to set up; we send you the code for your carrier. (Works on pay monthly plans with Spark, One NZ and 2degrees, free to set up — on prepaid, take a KiwiCalls number instead.) Or take a KiwiCalls number: a new local company number that runs 24/7, no new phone or SIM — put it on your vehicles and website as the number to ring, and you get every job by text. That number is ours — if you ever stop, it goes with the service. Prefer to keep your own number? You can, and nothing changes if you leave.
How does it know my services and prices?
You tell it once at setup — your trade, your area, the jobs you do, your rough pricing, the questions you get asked. It's built around your business. And it never quotes your prices to a caller — it takes the job and leaves the pricing to you, where it belongs.
What does it cost?
Flat monthly plans, on the page: Starter NZ$69 (up to 150 minutes), Standard NZ$119 (up to 300), Busy NZ$239 (up to 600). No setup fee, no lock-in, cancel any time. Go over your minutes and we move you up a plan — we tell you first, no surprise bills.
How long does it take to set up?
Usually same-day to a few days, depending on your trade and how much we tailor it. You fill in one form; we do the rest, then you hear it answer as your business before you pay us anything.
I'm not sure I trust AI with my business.
Start small — let it catch only the calls you'd otherwise miss, and it texts you the leads it catches so you can see exactly what it's doing. Watch the texts for a couple of weeks. If it's not earning its place, cancel — there's no lock-in holding you.
